TEHRAN (AFP) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday proposed holding a public debate with his US counterpart George W. Bush at the United Nations this month and a "global referendum" to decide who was right.
Ahmadinejad confirmed in an interview with Iranian television he would be visiting Iran’s arch enemy the United States for the third time to take part in the General Assembly next week.
"I proposed it last year. I will go to New York. Let’s sit down and talk. But not behind closed doors.
"I propose discussing international questions at the UN General Assembly in order to solve them," he added.
"Our aim is to solve global problems," he continued. "He (Bush) gives his position and I give mine. The representatives of 200 countries meet there and they can judge," he said.
Ahmadinejad offered Bush a public debate before he travelled to the United Nations last year, a proposal that was spurned by the White House

Bush has a serious superiority complex and has cut off his nose to spite his face on many occasions where he could have brokered peace with many different countries when he refused to sit down and talk with them. I think he knows how dumb he sounds when speaking and also doesn’t want to enter into a battle of wits unarmed.

Ahmadinejad is a loose cannon and will say anything in front of cameras so the idiots back home can call him a hero.

What Ahmadinejad is doing is putting Bush in a tight political corner. If he accepts, Bush will look weak and would look like he is submitting to the wishes of Iran. If he does not accept, then Ahmadinejad has proven his point to the world that we are the great Satan bent on only bullying the Muslim world and military aggression, thus Ahmadinejad would able to justify to have weapons of mass destruction in order to defend it self from such aggression, which has already been proven by Bush’s saber rattling. Tight corner to be put in if you ask me.
As for those who says Ahmadinejad wants this and wants that, please bear in that the goverment of Iran is not centralized like the US. You have the official channels run by official goverment officials and then you have the clerics and possibly tribal leaders which wield much control also yet unoffically. Ahmadinejad has to show that he is in favor of helping all parties involved or he very well could lose power or his life. So even if he was truly in his heart pro-us, he cannot give actual support or even mention it if he does not want to run into dire domestic political consequences because he is not truly in control.

This implies that Ahmadinejad is on equal footing with Pres. Bush to start with. He isn’t. So why give Ahmadinejad the appearance of even seeming equal. No matter how you feel about Bush. Ahmadinejad is not even on par with Saddam Hussein alive or dead.
I don’t think there is anything noble about trying to raise dictators to the level of the leader of the free world. And that is the case.
Anytime something screwed up happens in the world It’s U.S. that comes to the rescue, while the rest of the world just ignore oppression, such as the mass slaughter in Africa, Saddam filling mass grave in Iraq and Milošević in Kosovo. We are superior in that way and many others. We send more money and assistance to countries experiencing disasters than any other country in the world.
How many of those countries have come here to help out during our disasters in the past 200 years. The only ones I know of in my life time is Canada during forest fires in Montana and Idaho. During the post Katrina floods, MANY other countries helped then.
